SAN JOSE – Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian today announced the appointment of Tina Dave to the County Social Services Advisory Commission. Dave was nominated by Simitian and unanimously confirmed by the Board of Supervisors.
“Tina understands how important our social services are,” said Simitian. “I’m delighted to have someone so thoughtful and experienced serving the folks who need us most.”
The Social Services Advisory Commission was established in 1978 and consists of fifteen members appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Commission assesses community social service needs and provides policy guidance to the Board of Supervisors and the Social Services Agency.
Dave has worked as a transitional counselor at Mountain View/Los Altos Adult School, where she helps students find pathways into careers, community and undergraduate colleges, or technical education. Many of her students are immigrants or English language learners. “I have always been passionate about listening to people and helping them to find solutions to their problems,” Dave said. “Serving on the Social Services Advisory Commission will allow me to continue to help and guide those people who are underserved in our society.”   Dave, who makes her home in Cupertino, is an immigrant who came to the United States from India in 2003. She earned an MBA in Marketing in India, and is currently working towards an MA in Career Counseling from San Jose State University. Dave also has her Elementary School Teaching Credentials, and volunteers with the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), where she supports teenage students struggling with mental health issues.
“My journey coming to this country and making my home here taught me how important it is to have people you can turn to when you need them,” Dave said. “I want to continue guiding my students and those in need towards their dreams of a brighter future; and helping them get the support and services they need.”
“Our Social Services Advisory Commission is there for the neediest among us,” said Simitian. “We’re the ‘safety net’ folks can count on when times are tough. And I’m really pleased that Tina has stepped up to help.”
