Listening to Trump’s America

Throughout his tenure in elected office, Supervisor Simitian has worked across the aisle to support all residents, regardless of their political affiliation. Seeking to understand the political divide between the Bay Area and other places across the country after President Trump was elected in 2016, Supervisor Simitian traveled to counties in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan that had previously voted Democratic, but supported President Trump.

Understanding Islam

In 2017, 2018, and 2019, Supervisor Simitian co-hosted and moderated a three-part speaker series called “Understanding Islam.” The first event drew such community interest that the subsequent events were moved to a larger venue, and Supervisor Simitian decided to host similar panels in two additional cities.

Understanding the Asian American and Pacific Islander Experience

In May 2021, Supervisor Simitian partnered with Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) to produce a series of panel discussions devoted to understanding the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience. Planned for months in advance, the timing coincided with Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and a rise in anti-Asian hate incidents and crimes.
