Simitian appoints three Saratogans to boards and commissions

SAN JOSE – Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian today announced the appointment of three Saratoga residents to County boards and commissions, including Sheila Couch and Sue Fitzpatrick to the Madronia Cemetery District Board of Trustees and Saratoga High School student Urmila Vudali to the County’s Youth Task Force.

“These local residents all have demonstrated a passion for public service, and a history of initiative and engagement within the community,” said Simitian. “I’m pleased we’ve got a good group of people to serve on our boards and commissions.”

Madronia Cemetery District

The Saratoga Cemetery District was created by voters in 1927 to provide cost-effective burials for residents and property owners in the District. It oversees the maintenance, management, and preservation of the Madronia Cemetery, a 12.5-acre parcel located within the city of Saratoga. The District covers the city of Saratoga, as well as parts of Monte Sereno and unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.

Sue Fitzpatrick is an active community volunteer in Saratoga, where she has lived for 50 years. She has been involved with the Junior League of San Jose and the Volunteer Exchange of Silicon Valley, among many others.

Shiela Couch, a long-time Saratoga resident, said, “I know and love this community. I appreciate the serene beauty the Madronia Cemetery offers grieving families, and those coming to pay tribute to their loved ones as the years pass.”

Youth Task Force

The County’s Youth Task Force is made up of 15 high-school aged youth who serve as an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors. Members are involved with making policy recommendations concerning youth in the County, and working to find solutions that will improve the lives of young people in our community today.

Urmila Vudali, a sophomore at Saratoga High School, founded the Mosaic Saratoga High Club and organized Mosaic Saratoga, a festival of music, dance, and cuisine. She has also volunteered on numerous local campaigns.

“I believe that youth need to be more involved in community service and civic activities,” said Vudali. “Decisions made at the local and county level have a direct impact on youth and their future.”
