Electoral wins by women create vacancies on Commission on the Status of Women

This past November, all three of Santa Clara County Board President Joe Simitian’s appointees to the County’s Commission on the Status of Women won their bids for elective office. Commissioner Yan Zhao was elected to the Saratoga City Council. Commissioner Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto was elected to Fremont Union High School District School Board. And – most notably – Commissioner (and School Board Member) Susan Ellenberg was elected to the County Board of Supervisors.

That means there are now vacancies in all three Commission on the Status of Women slots designated for appointment by Simitian.

“This is a great problem to have,” said Simitian. “It means that we now have three experienced public servants in office, and it creates an opportunity for three new folks to contribute. In my view, this is a winner all around.”

The Commission on the Status of Women acts as an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors on issues surrounding discrimination based on sex and gender. Its make-up includes 15 members who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for a term of three years.
